What does a typical client journey look like? Most clients start with a block of 6 or 12 sessions and we meet every two weeks for 5 - 9 months. A 10 session package looks like this: 1 x 30 min session in person or on a call. In this short session we will get to know each other, I will answer any questions you may have and we will decide if we are a good fit for coaching. I believe the main determiner of any successful coaching relationship is rapport so we need to agree that we have this before we commit to a partnership. We will draft your coaching goals and set expectations for the coaching relationship. I will send you the coaching agreement for you to sign, the invoice (to be paid in full before the first session) and a coaching questionnaire to complete before the first session. 10 x 60 min coaching sessions - 1 session every two weeks. Session 4 or 5: Reflection point. We will review your progress so far and also how the coaching relationship is going. Clients can pause or cancel the coaching journey at any time. This is a typical client journey but they are all tailored to the client’s individual needs.
How does coaching differ from therapy? Professional coaching focuses on setting goals, creating outcomes and managing personal change. Sometimes it’s helpful to understand coaching by distinguishing it from other personal or organisational support professions. • Therapy: Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or in relationships. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past that hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways. Coaching, on the other hand, supports personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. Coaching is future-focused, and the coaching relationship emphasises action, accountability and follow-through. • Consulting: Individuals or organizations retain consultants for their expertise. While consulting approaches vary widely, the assumption is the consultant will diagnose problems and prescribe and, sometimes, implement solutions. With coaching, the assumption is that individuals or teams are capable of generating their own solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks. • Mentoring: A mentor is an expert who provides wisdom and guidance based on his or her own experience. Mentoring may include advising, counselling and coaching. The coaching process does not include advising or counselling, and focuses instead on individuals or groups setting and reaching their own objectives. • Training: Training programs are based on objectives set out by the trainer or instructor. Though objectives are clarified in the coaching process, they are set by the individual or team being coached, with guidance provided by the coach. Training also assumes a linear learning path that coincides with an established curriculum. Coaching is less linear, without a set curriculum. *International Coaching Federation
How do I know if coaching is going to help me? You don’t! But I hope this helps you decide.. Read the ICF’s tips on hiring a coach here I offer a free 30 min session so we can decide if we are a good fit. If I don’t believe I can help you achieve your goals through coaching with me, I have an extensive network of excellent coaches and therapists I can refer you to. I would also recommend you meet with three or more coaches to “try before you buy”! Here are some indications that coaching might help you: You may feel stuck or you have a deep desire to make some changes in your life. You might have become intolerant of small talk and craving honest, authentic and vulnerable conversations You might feel jealous of someone else’s happiness or success. You’re sick of people pleasing or putting others’ needs before your own There might be a part(s) of your personal or professional life that feels misaligned or “not right”. This may manifest itself in your body, mind or behaviour. You might have a growing feeling of frustration around people who used to energise you but now drain you You may feel a deep desire to know yourself better and make quicker, more confident decisions. You may have experienced a life event that has shifted your perspective on life and you feel drawn to living life to the full You have had therapy in the past but now need more forward focused, goal and action orientated support
